Decreasing eutrophication

The aim of preventing eutrophication is to reduce the load of suspended solids and nutrients, such as phosphorus and nitrogen, entering inland waters and the Baltic Sea, and to enhance the circular economy of nutrients.

Our actions in this theme are:

Commitment:
We will refrain from discharge of sewage/grey water containing nutrients during the race; use shore facilities for toilets/wastewater where practicable; choose phosphate-free/eco-labelled cleaning products.

Reducing hazardous substances

The aim of reducing harmful substances is to decrease and prevent harmful substances, such as toxic chemicals, plastics, and oils, from entering water, soil, and air.

Our actions in this theme are:

Commitment:
We will prevent fuel/oil spills during refuelling and engine work; securely store oils, chemicals and batteries; use environmentally preferable cleaning products; never discharge chemicals or contaminated water overboard.

Increasing biodiversity

The aim of increasing biodiversity is to halt biodiversity loss and safeguard the diversity of species and habitats by combating invasive alien species and protecting and restoring natural environments.

Our actions in this theme are:

Commitment:
We will avoid disturbing wildlife and sensitive coastal habitats; don’t anchor unnecessarily in sensitive seabed habitats; clean/check equipment to reduce movement of invasive species between waters.

Promoting sustainable use of the seas

The aim of promoting the sustainable use of the seas is to ensure environmental sustainability in maritime transport, recreational use, and other marine industries.

Our actions in this theme are:

Commitment:
We will sail rather than motor whenever operationally possible; minimise engine use; maintain the boat properly to reduce leaks/emissions; make environmental practice part of race preparation.

Preventing littering

The aim of preventing littering is to minimise the amount of waste generated by properly sorting waste and removing litter that has already ended up in the environment.

Our actions in this theme are:

Commitment:
We will minimise single-use packaging; use refillable bottles; sort and retain all waste onboard until it can be disposed of ashore; pick up any floating litter when safe and practical.

Increasing cooperation and inclusion

The aim of increasing cooperation and participation is to enhance water protection collaboration within and between organisations, increase knowledge of best practices, and integrate consideration of the Baltic Sea into the organisation’s regular operations.

Our actions in this theme are:

Commitment:
We will brief the entire Rush crew on the commitment; appoint somebody to oversee the sustainability actions; share what we’re doing through the team’s/race’s communications; encourage other sailors to adopt the same practices.
