What is the Baltic Sea Challenge?
The Baltic Sea Challenge coordinates the water conservation work of the cities of Turku and Helsinki. We prompt new cooperation efforts and tighten already existing ones for the good of the Baltic Sea both within the cities and in a larger network. We highlight the importance of conservation work of the Baltic Sea.
Background to the Cities' Cooperation
In 2007, Turku and Helsinki wanted to tighten their cooperation on water conservation and act as pioneers for other operators. Since then, the cities have executed the joint Baltic Sea Programme, which contains concrete steps towards reducing the cities’ impact on waterways. Back then, the cities also challenged a group of other operators to water conservation efforts, from where the name “Baltic Sea Challenge” stems. Through the challenge, the Baltic Sea Network was born: A group of organisations committed to water conservation that share lessons, knowledge, and cooperation possibilities. Up until today, more than 300 organisations have joined the network.
Baltic Sea Network
Our network comprises municipalities, organisations, associations, and companies. We share tips, successes, and current information on water conservation. The goal is for the network members to find each other and together execute joint and effective Baltic Sea actions.
Baltic Sea Action Plan
The Baltic Sea Action Plan guides the Baltic Sea work of the cities of Turku and Helsinki. It sets the focus points for the network’s operations as well. A new Plan is published every five years. Currently, the fourth action period (2024–2028) is ongoing for the Baltic Sea Challenge.
